English language is a funny language and the common errors are as follows:

Determiners

Determiners

Determiners are used to either demonstrate or show possession. For eg; this is my car. Here the determiner is this. The common mistakes related to determiners are the absence of them in a sentence. Whenever one is in flow and writes non stop, determiners at times are neglected. One has to be very careful while writing and make sure that determiners are properly used.

Prepositions

Prepositions

They are used to define places and positions. They are often misused for example saying “I killed him by a sword” is a wrong sentence formation. The right sentence will be “I killed him with a sword.” Many times we use ‘in’ and ‘at’, at wrong places. For eg; the party was at my friend’s place. The common mistake that one would make in this is, the party was in my friend’s place. Prepositions are to be used carefully. They form a very important part of grammar.

Articles

Articles

Articles are important in sentence construction. These are a, an and the. The common mistake we make with articles is that we judge them by the presence of vowel or consonant whereas the right way is to judge them by the sound and not alphabet. If a word gives a sound of the vowel, then, an, is used before it. ‘The’, which is a definite article is used only with proper nouns and is omitted before the names of countries like India.

Conjunctions

Conjunctions

Conjunctions are connecting words. They are but, because, and etc. The common errors related to conjunctions are made when their correct meaning is not understood. For eg; She worked hard but she failed. The conjunction but is used to show contradiction and never in similar sentences like, I like bread and butter. Proper use of conjunctions will be able to convey the right message that you, as a writer, want to give to your readers.

Its & It’s

Its & It’s

The strange case of its and it’s has haunted the writings of many writers. It is very important to understand the right meaning of these words so that much time is not wasted in their corrections. It’s is the short form of it is or it has, hence instead of writing it’s, it is better to write is or it has. Its is the possessive form of it. For eg; It’s started to rain (It has started to rain.)The possessive sentence will be Its my house on the opposite side.

Homophones

Homophones

Homophones are those words that are pronounced in the same way but they differ in their spellings and meanings. Most writers make a lot of mistakes related to homophones. For eg; good hair compliments good looks and we do not have full complement of workers for the project. In the first sentence, compliment is used as a remark. In the second sentence, complement is used to denote quantity, assortment or number. Some other common misspelt homophones are,

1 Practice and Practise

2 There and Their

3 Flee and Flea

4 Axel and Axle

5 Principal and Principle

6 Stationary and Stationery etc

Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee

Spellings form the most important part of any sentence. Wrong spellings are the most common mistakes that one makes and wastes a lot of time in order to write the correct spelling. Following are the words, for which spelling errors are most made,

1 Necessary and not necessary

2 Colonel and not kernel

3 Woolen and not woolen

4 Lieutenant etc.

The above mentioned errors are most commonly made by good writers and ordinary writers. A good check on these errors will ensure a good and error free content.
