A VFX demo reel is one of the best ways to get noticed as a visual effects artist. Simply speaking, a demo reel is just a series of video clips showcasing some of your work, usually set to some type of music. It can show just short clips of the final product, or do short breakdowns of the scene production to give a hint of your workflow. When done well, a demo reel can drastically increase the interest in your work and even open up doors for you on some new exciting projects.
I’ve gone around and collected up demo reels from some of my favorite visual effects artists. You’ll find some matte painting and visual effects work here from David Luong, Feng Zhu and others, and also see behind-the-scenes work on films such as Spiderman 3, Iron Man, Star Wars and others. Sam Larson’s video for the Iron Man work is eye-opening, and Feng Zhu’s concept work laid the framework for Star Wars battle scenes, as well as Transformers. And of course, David Luong has his work from World of Warcraft to show off as well.
